Just over one year after Ashton Lambie (Lincoln, Neb.) shattered Australian Jack Bobridge’s previous World Record in the Individual Pursuit, Lambie lowered his own World Record from 4:07.25 to a new unofficial World Record of 4:06.407 at the 2019 Pan-American Track Cycling Championships in Cochabomba, Bolivia..
When asked about his performance Lambie said, “It feels great to shave a little time off the record. I’m looking forward to the finals tonight and representing the stars and stripes.”
“Ashton has continued to impress since he exploded onto the scene in 2017,” added Scott Schnitzspahn, Vice President of Elite Athletics, “His persistence, athletic ability and hard work continually raises the bar for our entire Men’s Endurance Track Program. We are looking forward to continuing this trajectory as we continue the charge towards 2020.”
Lambie has enjoyed a quick rise to the top echelon of track cyclists. He first represented USA Cycling only two years ago at the 2017 Pan-American Championships after winning the Individual Pursuit and placing second in the Omnium and Points race earlier in the summer at his first-ever Track National Championship. Lambie has continued to represent Team USA in several World Cups and World Championships including the 2019 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Poland where he bettered his previous year’s result in the Individual Pursuit placing fifth.
Earlier in the event, Lambie was part of the Individual Pursuit squad of Eric Young (Geneva, Ill.), Daniel Holloway (Boulder, Colo.), and John Croom (Colorado Springs, Colo.) that set a new American Record clocking a time of 3:52.747, earning a silver medal behind the new World Record holding team from Canada. Sprinters Madalyn Godby (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and James Mellen (Schnecksville, Penn.) also broke National Records in the Flying 200.
Lambie and Croom will race in the finals tonight for the Gold and Bronze medals respectively.
The Pan American Championships are held annually for member nations of the Pan American Cycling Confederation. Riders competing in the Pan American Cycling Championships are selected by their respective national governing bodies and provide another avenue for athletes to qualify for World Championships. The lineup of seven men and seven women will represent Team USA over the five-day event, which began on Sept. 4 and will run through Sept 8, 2019 in Cochabomba, Bolivia.
