Team USA Recap: Stephens and Roberts capture Pan Am Games Gold in Road Race and BMX Freestyle

We recap the latest in American bike racing from the past two weeks (October 23-November 7)

PAN AMERICAN GAMES

(October 20-November 5) – Week two of the Pan Am Games saw more podium finishes for the US, including gold medals in the Women’s Road Race and BMX Freestyle.

Lauren Stephens won gold in the women’s road race, and despite a crash and wheel change that slowed down Team USA’s Kristen Faulkner, she managed to place 6th. A week earlier Faulkner earned gold in the Individual Time Trial while Stephens placed 4th.

In the track competition, Chloe Patrick and Collen Gulick took bronze in the Women’s Madison, and Mandy Marquardt earned her second medal of the games when she took bronze in Women’s Sprint. The men’s team of Brendan Rhim, Colby Lange, David Domonoske, Grant Koontz and Anders Johnson earned bronze in Team Pursuit, then Lange and Koontz teamed up to earn bronze in Men’s Madison, their first time racing that event together.

Hannah Roberts won gold in BMX Freestyle on the final day of competition, clinching both the Pan American Games Women’s BMX Freestyle title and the overall World Cup title for the season.

USCX Really Rad Festival: Falmouth, MA

(October 28-29) – For the final race of the USCX series, and for the second weekend in a row, US CX champion Curtis White (Steve Tilford Foundation) took 1st on both days, winning C1 on Saturday and C2 on Sunday at the Really Rad Festival. Jules Van Kempen (Cervelo-Orange Living) placed 2ndbehind White on Saturday.

David Thompson (Finkraft Junior Cycling) and Henry Coote (Competitive Edge Racing) placed 1-2 in junior C1 racing, and the next day, Thompson, Coote and Alexander Scopinich-Burgel (New England Devo p/b Cadence Wealth Management) went 1, 2, 3 in junior C2 racing. On the women’s junior side, Haylee Johnson (Finkraft Junior Cycling) placed 3rd in C1 racing, while Lidia Cusack (CXD Trek Bikes) took 2nd in C2. Katie Clouse (Cannondale) placed 3rd in the women’s elite C2 race.

White placed 1st overall and Van Kempen 4th in the series final standings in men’s elite. Lauren Zoerner (Groove Offroad Racing) was 4th and Raylyn Nuss (Steve Tilford Foundation) 5th in elite women’s. Henry Coote, David Thompson and Miles Mattern (CXD Trek Bikes) ranked 1-3 in the men’s junior final standings. Haylee Johnson, Alyssa White (Finkraft Junior Cycling) and Alyssa Sarkisov (CXD-Trek Bikes) took 2nd, 3rd and 4th overall for junior women.

Pan American Cyclocross Championships: Missoula, MT

(November 4-5) – Over two days of racing in Missoula, Pan American Champion titles were awarded across all Masters categories, along with UCI titles in Junior, U23 and Elite.

Eric Brunner (WTB/Pivot Endurance) won the men’s elite race for the third year in a row, with Scott Funston (WTB/Pivot Endurance) and Gage Hecht placing 2nd and 3rd. Clara Honsinger (Team S&M CX) and Katie Clouse (Steve Tilford Foundation) took 2nd and 3rd in the elite women’s race.

Lauren Zoerner (Groove Offroad Racing) won the women’s U23 title and Jules Van Kempen(Cervelo-Orange Living) placed 3rd in men’s U23. David Thompson (Finkraft Junior Cycling) won the men’s junior race for the 2nd year in a row, with Henry Coote (Competitive Edge Racing) andLuke Walter (Boulder Junior Cycling) placing 2nd and 3rd. Vida Lopez de San Roman (Bear National) and Jorja Bond (Boulder Junior Cycling) took 2nd and 3rd in women’s juniors.

UCI Track Champions League: Round 2, Berlin & Round 3, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines

(October 28 and November 4)Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) won the Women’s Scratch race and took 10th in Elimination at round 2 of the UCI Track Champions League, securing 4th place overall in the women’s Endurance category. On the men’s side, Gavin Hoover (L39ION of Los Angeles) placed 7th in Elimination and 10th in Scratch.

The following weekend in France, Williams took 4th in Elimination and 9th in Scratch to finish round 3 in 7th place overall. Hoover placed 9th in both Elimination and Scratch and is in 8th place overall after round 3.

There are 36 men and 36 women from around the globe competing in the Track Champions League, with the two US riders, Hoover and Williams, competing in the Endurance category.

The last two rounds take place in London on November 10 and 11.
